I have been tagged by the honourable Kindred Spirit in a form of interweb chain lettering/blogging, and am glad because it makes me feel like a real Catholic to be asked this.

I really wanted to put "Introibo ad altare Dei" but that's a part of the liturgy.
Ok, here we go:
3 favourite personal prayers:
1. Act of Hope:
"O God, I hope with complete trust that you will give me, through the merits of Jesus Christ, all necessary grace in this world and everlasting life in the world to come, for this is what you have promised and you always keep your promises".
2. St. Augustine's Prayer (my friend gave me a card with this on it and I carry it in my wallet and pray it whenever I get the chance):
"God of our life, there are days when the burdens we carry chafe our shoulders and weigh us down; when the road seems dreary and endless, the skies gray and threatening; when our lives have no music in them, and our hearts are lonely, and our souls have lost their courage. Flood the path with light, turn our eyes to where the skies are full of promise; turn our hearts to brave music; give us the sense of comradeship with heroes and saints of every age; and so quicken our spirits that we may be able to encourage the souls of all who journey with us on the road of life to your honor and glory."

Not the best picks, but by and large I mostly pray the Rosary, some part of the Liturgy, or just 'free-style'. I had two great Jesuit prayer cards but when I turned Anglican again I got rid of them.

ReplyDelete1. Glory Be: I actually add some of the Te Deum into it and say something like "Glory be to the Father, of majesty unbounded, and to his true and only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide, as it was in the beginning...
2. Act of faith, hope, and love--these are easy and great
3. Regina Coeli: I do pray the Angelus off and on around noon, but I love it during Easter when the Angelus gives way to the Regina Coeli

ReplyDelete1. Angelus. When I was in grade school, the pastor visited Ireland & brought back the rosary. I got in trouble for moving during the Angelus bells (at noon) and a teacher had me copy the words. Today, the angelus is the reminder of the fact that puts everything else into motion.
ReplyDelete2. The Memorare. I didn't learn this one until I was in high school seminary and was disappointed that nobody had taught it to me before then. Several days ago the words "mother of the Word Incarnate" jumped out at me and I was jolted by Mary's intimacy with the incarnation.
3. veni Sancte Spiritus, veni per Mariam. Begging for Christ to show himself to me in front of any circumstance. I remember I was praying this in my car a few years back and seeing a man in my rear view mirror urging me to pull onto the shoulder. My poor corolla was on fire. I remember thinking: this is the circumstance that Christ has given me. The man gave me a short lift to the gas station on the exit where I could call me dad for a life.
